Agrilia Monastery

Southeastern of the gulf of Sami, on o hill with an amazing view to the enormous blue sea you can find Agrilia Monastery. As in every monastery of Kefalonia, here too peace and natural beauty are the main characteristics. The deep blue waters of Antisamos beach on one side, and the panoramic view of Sami bay on the other are surrounded by the green color of the hills.

Saint Andrew Monastery

It is found in Livatho southwest of Saint George’s Castle at Peratata village. It is a very old Byzantine Monastery that was re-established by three nuns namely Magdalini, Benedicte and Leontia. In 1936 princess Roxanne Tsigara, having survived a shipwreck, arrived at the Monastery and decided to stay there and become a nun. She dedicated her big fortune to the Monastery, as well as the foot of Apostle Andrew, that today is saved in the temple.

The Madonna Lilies in Pastra

In Pastra village there is a temple where every year a strange phainomenon takes place. Lilies collected on March 25th and placed in a special case in front of the icon of Virgin Mary, blossom again after a period that they have been dried out. This phenomenon even though it has been scientifically explained, is considered to be a miracle and attracts many pilgrims basically on August 14th, day on which the dormition of Virgin Mary is celebrated.

The Holy Snakes at Markopoulo

Panagia Lagouvarda or Panagia Fidousa is found at Markopoulo village. Every year at the beginning of August the little snakes appear and crawl around on Virgin Mary’s icon until August 15th. These snakes have a characteristic cross on their heads and are thought to be harmless and sacred. In fact their appearance is thought to be a good omen for the upcoming year whereas their absence a sign of bad lack. In 1940 and 1953 the snakes did not appear and many bad things happened for the island.
