Sami
Strange geological phenomena are undoubtedly the main chatacteristic of this area at the east side of the island around the port of Sami. The cave park that consists of Drogarati Agalaki and Zervati Caves, Melissani and Avithos Lakes, each of them having its own character, and Karavomilos, the point where the water from Katavothres in Argostoli ends up, after a distance of 17 kilometers, are definitely enough to convince you. But the beauties of Sami do not end here. Small scenic villages, beautiful beaches like Antisamos and Agia Paraskevi, the Agrilia Monastery, the ruins of Saints Fanentes Monastery, as well as the ruins of the ancient city Sami are only some of the attractions worth seeing in Sami.
In summer 2000 the area attained special glamour since Sami was selected as filming location for the Hollywood production “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin". A big part of the city was transformed in a film set, set was also constructed at the ruined by the earthquakes village Dixalia, and Antisamos temporarily lent its beauty for the necessities of filming.
