Saint George's Castle
Saint George's Castle
In Livatho area, on a hill above Travliata village you can find Castle of Saint George. Its name comes from Saint George’s Chapel which is one of the many chapels found within the castle. It has been the capital of the island from the Middle Ages till 1757, when the capital was transferred to Argostoli that till then was nothing but a small port. In those tumultuous ages there was the need to protect the inhabitants from the pirate’s attacks, and for that they had to abandon Krani that was the capital of the island till then and dwell on the hill so that they can locate in time any hostile arrivals.
The castle has polygonal shape and perimeter that measures 600 meters. It has three bastions and battlements that are very well preserved, while in the interior space of the castle many damages have been caused because of the earthquakes.
Visiting the castle you will get the chance to admire the panoramic view of Livatho and if you wish, you can relax at the canteen found a few meters from the entrance of the castle.
