Atros Monastery
Atros Monastery
In a landscape of distinct beauty and at a 760 meters height you can find Kefalonia’s oldest monastery founded during the Byzantine era. Its name seems to come from the word “atrotos” which in Greek means invulnerable since due to its position it was protected by attacks from the pirates. In order to get there you will need to go through an ascending road framed by yews, arbutus and bushes. Even though the road is narrow at certain points it is quite well accessible by cars. In any case, the route is ideal for hiking and for that reason many visitors choose to go there by foot. When you get there you will be impressed by the peace and beauty of the landscape and the panoramic view. Right in front of your feet you can see Poros, Zante and the Ionian Sea. You will also be impressed by the history that emerges from every corner of the monastery. First of all, the medieval tower that has been recently renovated, the little chapel built in 1855, the old oven found in the cellar and the guest room. At the monastery a celebration is carried out every year on September 8th, date of birth of Virgin Mary.
