Kabana Square
Kabana Square
It is found in Lithostroto, the most central street of Argostoli and is closely connected to the history of the island and the struggles for its independence, and for many years was the central square of the city. At the square there are characteristic palm trees and a fountain that used to provide the whole area with water in the old times. The trademark of the square though is the Clock Tower that was reconstructed after it was destroyed by the 1953 earthquakes. At this square the book where all the nobles of the island were listed (libro d’oro: golden book) was burnt which meant the ending of discrimination between social classes. At the same time, the tree of freedom was planted there which was meant to symbolize the end of Venetian occupation of the island. At Kabana Square the Radical movement was also born, which played a major role in the liberation of the island from the English.
Today at the square there is a cafeteria and a kid’s playground.
